Warehouse Packing Station Automation
The Space Between Picking & Shipping
In today’s eCommerce environment, the pack process is a common bottleneck between picking and shipping. Packing challenges include speed to beat carrier cutoff times, timely delivery to meet customer expectations, and incorrect or missing documentation.
1. Order Picking
This is where the order fulfillment process starts. New orders are retrieved from the shelves and placed in cartons.
2. Card or Collateral Insert
As open cartons move along in the process, often times marketing collateral is added to the order, for promotional purposes, either for a sale or maybe a loyalty program.
3. Packslip Print/Fold/Insert
Before the cartons are closed and sealed, the invoice is inserted. This can either be a small thermal packing slip, or it can be a full multi-page invoice, and other items such as assembly instructions or regulatory documents.
4. Carton Closure & Seal
Once the carton contains all the necessary items and documentation, it can be closed, either via a taper or a case erector that also adds padding.
5. Shipping
After closure, the carton is ready to be shipped. It can be dimensioned, weighed, a shipping label can be manifested, printed and applied, and verified for accuracy.
6. Sortation
Once the shipping label is applied, it can be sorted either via carrier, shipping speed, weight, or by any other means of organizing outgoing shipments.
